DIY Travel Busy Board for Kids - a DIY Lego board too!

Whether you're a frequent flyer, a frequent carpool driver or a frequent restaurant diner I have a feeling you'll like this DIY travel busy board.  It takes just a few minutes to make and doesn't use any hard to find materials.  Isn't that the WORST when a craft calls for obscure things?  In fact the base of it is pretty clever if you ask me!  It's nothing more than a cutting board with a handle.

The handle makes it easy for little ones to carry it and the slightly indented shape helps keep supplies on the board.   The truly genius part is that the markers and pad stick to the board with the help of some inexpensive Velcro.  I guess you could use magnets too if you wanted but when it comes to small children I think it's best to avoid magnets.  I could go on to name about 30 toy recalls related to magnets but I won't.  Stick to Velcro.

You can use strips or dots, it's up to you.  Put the soft parts of the Velcro on the markers so if they get tossed in your handbag or shuffled around you won't wind up with them snagging a sweater that you love.  I chose Crayola Pip-Squeaks because their size is just right to fit with a pad.

I added Velcro to the corners of this mini legal pad.  You can buy them at Walmart in a 3 pack for about $1.50 which is a steal.  When your child mows through one just have a backup in your bag waiting to go.  My child goes through them like you wouldn't believe, but it's SO worth it for the amount of babysitting I get from those $.50 pads.

To make our busy board airplane specific I created a little runway on the back.  It's just some black electrical tape you can find in just about any store for about $1.  Unless you have a handy husband and then it may just be hanging out in your garage....hint I was lacking both.  I added a few little chalk dashes and Kayla was ready to play.  It was perfect for Dusty and Bulldog who are Kayla's two favorite characters from Disney's Planes.

If your child is old enough another fun option is to add one of these Lego plates to the back.   Kayla has a mild obsession with these girly lego sets so it was perfect.   You'll have to cut it down a bit, but it's possible to do with some kitchen shears.  Just use Velcro following the same method as the coloring section.  Sure Legos have lots of pieces and can be a bit messy but if you've got a child who is about 4 and up this may be the perfect flip side to the coloring part.  Just toss a little bag of Legos in their backpack or your bag and you are ready to go wherever your final destination may be!

We took Kayla on a little weekend trip to LA this week and let me tell you, there were a half a dozen times where I whipped this out and had instant entertainment.  It was the perfect way for me to get a little break and spend some quality time with family, friends and most importantly my not-so-handy husband.
